I recently came across an idea that stuck with me because it put words to something I talk about with people all the time, especially the youth.

“You have to build with a shovel in one hand and a sword in the other, because while you’re building, you’ve still got battles to fight.”

Building the life you want comes with protecting and strengthening yourself on the inside.

From a young age, we’re taught the same thing over and over.

Build. Build yourself, build your family, your home, your wealth, your business. And that’s good, that’s what you’re supposed to do. But while you’re doing all that, you’re also building something else without realizing it, and without a shield to protect it, it can crumble at any time.

Building exposes you, inside and out. Externally, it’s the economy, the market, the things outside your control. Internally, it’s the anxiety, the stress, the weight you carry. If you’re not building emotional security alongside everything else, those stresses eventually catch up to you. And the higher you’ve climbed, the more dangerous the fall.

The loudest voices are the ones in your own head. A lot of this pressure comes from inside, from the stories we tell ourselves, the whispers at two in the morning. I believe those anxieties live only in your head, not in your heart. As you build yourself up, self-doubt creeps in and gets loud in the shadows, and that’s exactly why you have to keep a pure heart. That’s where your spirit lives. When the doubt gets loud, your inner voice has to get louder. You turn inward, and you listen.

“You have to build with a shovel in one hand and a sword in the other, because while you're building, you've still got battles to fight.”

Your peace has to be yours alone. It can’t be conditional on anyone or anything else. The moment you hand it to another person, or hinge it on a goal or an outcome, it stops being yours. And we all know our plans rarely go the way we expect, so if your joy depends on something you don’t fully control, you’ve set yourself up for disappointment. Be around people who make you happy, absolutely. But your peace has to come from within.

Learn the difference between truth and story. Everything we go through is really two things. Truth is what actually happened. I got in a fender bender; that’s a fact. Story is everything you pile on afterward. Now my whole day is ruined. You have a disagreement, and suddenly you don’t like that person, and the rumor mill starts turning. Most people suffer because they live inside the stories in their head instead of the facts.

You have three options with any story, and it’s simple. You can change it, challenge it, or accept it. Sometimes you can’t change it, because that takes someone else opting in. So the real question is whether you’re willing to challenge it, and challenging doesn’t mean confrontation; you can do it respectfully. And if neither fits, you accept it and move on. The minute you stop trying to be right and start asking questions, you find truth. Good questions rarely put people on the defensive; they invite a real conversation, and the answers fill in the gaps your assumptions left behind.

It takes real strength to say, “I might not have all the facts. I could be wrong. It takes courage to say I’m willing to reconsider how I see this. Maybe we’re both right. But I care about you enough to want to figure it out together.” You hear me, I hear you, and we both listen. That’s where peace lives.
