Have you ever felt trapped in your own thoughts? ** ** You might be wondering, “Why is a real estate agent discussing this?” While I’m not a mental health expert, I’ve learned valuable lessons from my own experiences, and I want to share them with you because, like many people, I sometimes struggle with negative thoughts.

For me, these negative thoughts often take the form of imposter syndrome. Nagging thoughts like “I’m not good enough,” “People are taking advantage of me,” or “I’m overlooked.” These kinds of thoughts can be very powerful and contribute to feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression.

The good news is, there are effective ways to break these thought patterns. I’ll share 5 tips to help you manage these thoughts and take control of your mind.

1. Acknowledge the situation. The first step is to acknowledge your feelings. James Stockdale, a Vietnam War prisoner who survived his ordeal, once said,

“You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality.”

So, be honest with yourself, face your situation head-on, and accept that these feelings are real and happening to you.

2. Challenge your inner dialogue. Ask yourself: Are these feelings based on facts, or is my mind just playing tricks? Did someone actually say those hurtful things, or are they just echoing inside my head?

It’s important to differentiate between objective truths and the stories our minds create. This awareness will help reclaim your confidence and reshape your inner dialogue.

“Life’s too short not to enjoy the little victories.”

3. Be compassionate to yourself. Let’s be honest: you’re just like everyone else. You’re doing your best, and that’s totally okay. Allow yourself some grace and take a break.

4. Reframe your thoughts. Interrupt your negative thinking by establishing healthy habits, like journaling with a focus on gratitude. List three simple things you can do today to improve your life and focus on things you can control and aren’t dependent on anyone else.

Think about how you can inspire or uplift someone else. If you’re feeling down, try to make someone else feel good instead. Engage in physical activity like hitting the gym, taking a walk, or going for a run.

5. Practice cognitive restructuring. What are you consuming to improve your mindset? Books are helpful for this, but listening to positive podcasts works, too.

6. Celebrate small wins. Don’t wait for big moments to celebrate. Instead, do it regularly. Figure out what you must achieve for a great day, week, or month, and plan how to celebrate those wins. Life’s too short not to enjoy the little victories.

7. Let go of perfection. Remember, perfection is the enemy of progress. Taking any step forward, no matter how small, is better than doing nothing while waiting for the “perfect” moment.

8. Talk to someone. Don’t keep it all bottled up. Suffering in silence is not heroic; it can be destructive. While it’s true, no one’s going to save you. There’s no shortage of people who can help you.

Life can be tough, especially as adults. But we often make it harder by being mean to ourselves. Having a process to help you regain emotional control and restore your peace can make a world of difference. Much of our negative thinking isn’t real, and that awareness keeps us present. That’s where the real peace lies.
